Risking Everything to Recover a Missing SoldierWhile commanding B Company inside the DMZ during heavy contact with North Vietnamese forces, LT John C. Everson earned the Bronze Star with Valor after moving 300 meters through an enemy automatic‑weapons kill zone to locate a missing point man presumed killed. Though the body lay too close to enemy bunkers to recover at night, his actions ensured it was retrieved the next morning.

Wounded Twice while Protecting His MenDuring a reconnaissance mission, 1st Lt. Michael R. Sullivan earned the Silver Star after placing his men in defensive positions under heavy fire, directing suppressive fire, and enabling his company to withdraw and regroup. Wounded twice while leading the defense, he continued fighting until forced to accept evacuation.

Courage and Leadership During a Catastrophic Tank ExplosionWhile commanding a tank company in West Germany, CPT Phillip Gray earned the Soldier’s Medal after a tank exploded near an ammunition point during gunnery qualification. He ordered the vehicle moved to safety, then climbed into the smoke‑filled, burning tank to remove ten rounds of HE ammunition and sensitive equipment. His decisive actions and disregard for personal danger protected soldiers and prevented further destruction.
